How to find an ADHD prescriber who takes UnitedHealthcare (Optum) in San Diego

Generic PPO insurance card on a desk

If you searched for this, you have probably already hit the wall: directories that list a dozen prescribers who aren't taking new patients, clinics with a three-month wait, and a plan card that names one company while your mental health claims seem to go to another. Here is how to get through it in one sitting.

First, understand the Optum part

UnitedHealthcare hands mental health benefits on most of its plans to Optum, which is part of the same company. That is why your card may say UnitedHealthcare while a phone number on the back, or your claims, say Optum Behavioral Health. It is one plan, not two. When you look for an ADHD prescriber, you are looking for someone in network for behavioral health, which usually means in the Optum network for your UnitedHealthcare plan.

I am in network with UnitedHealthcare PPO plans, with mental health visits handled through Optum.

Then, check your plan type

The plan type is on the card. PPO members can usually see any in-network prescriber without a referral. Other plan types can have narrower networks or referral rules, so it is worth one phone call to the behavioral health number on the back of your card. Ask two questions: "Is Erik Lee, PMHNP, at Well Coast Psychiatric in network for my plan?" and "Do I need a referral for outpatient psychiatry?" Give them the group NPI 1841784725 so they can find the practice. That call takes ten minutes and saves a wasted week.

Who prescribes ADHD medication in California

Psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners both prescribe the full range of ADHD medications, including stimulants. In California, prescribing a controlled substance requires a DEA registration and a check of the state's CURES database before each prescription, whichever kind of prescriber you see. I am a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner (PMHNP-BC) with the ADHD-Certified Clinical Services Provider credential, licensed in California and Oregon, and I prescribe both stimulant and non-stimulant medications by video after a full intake.

What "takes UnitedHealthcare" should mean

Three things, and it is worth confirming all of them before you book anywhere:

In network, not just "accepts." Out-of-network prescribers will bill your plan and leave you with the difference. Ask for in network specifically.

Telehealth covered. Most UnitedHealthcare plans cover video psychiatry, but confirm that yours does.

A wait you can live with. If you are already on medication, a ninety-day wait means running out. My intakes are usually available within one to two weeks, booked directly from the self-schedule page.

What it costs

Most PPO plans apply a specialist copay or coinsurance to each visit. If your plan has a deductible, you pay the plan's contracted rate for each visit until the deductible is met. I will tell you the number before you book, so there is no surprise. If you would rather not use insurance, self-pay is $550 for an intake and $325 for a follow-up, and I can provide a superbill for out-of-network reimbursement.

What the visit looks like

The first visit is a video intake that covers your history, current symptoms, prior treatment, and medical factors. If you have an existing diagnosis and a regimen that works, we usually continue it after that first visit. If you suspect ADHD but were never evaluated, I do a structured adult evaluation before any stimulant is prescribed. Follow-ups are by video, with occasional in-person visits available at my Scripps Ranch office at 10620 Treena Street. I see adults 21 and older who live, work, or study in California.

Common questions

Do you take UnitedHealthcare? Yes, UnitedHealthcare PPO plans, with mental health visits through Optum.

My card says UnitedHealthcare but my claims say Optum. Is that a problem? No. Optum manages mental health benefits for most UnitedHealthcare plans, so both names refer to the same coverage.

Do you take ComPsych? Yes.

Not seeing your plan? We can provide a superbill for out-of-network reimbursement.

I have Medi-Cal or Medicare. Not accepted.

Can you prescribe Adderall or Vyvanse by video? Yes, after a proper evaluation. Federal telehealth rules for controlled substances are in place through the end of 2026, and I check CURES before prescribing as California requires.

How do I book? From the self-schedule page, no phone call required. If you want to check your plan first, use the insurance eligibility tool on the site.
